Spring Cleaning for a Safer Home

Once again, it’s time for spring cleaning! At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we want to share some suggestions for helping our patients look at their homes with an eye to decreasing the risk of falling. Falls are the leading cause of non-fatal and fatal injuries among older adults. In fact, 95% of hip fractures are the result of a fall. Foot pain or symptoms such as numbness or tingling can be the root cause of a fall. That’s why as soon as you start to notice any uncomfortable symptoms in your toes, feet, or ankles it’s imperative that you contact our Hudson office by calling 727-868-2128 or 352-683-5799 and get an evaluation from our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales. Many falling hazards can also be found at home, however.

Checklist for Reducing Fall Risk

As you make the rounds in your home for your annual spring cleaning, consider some of these solutions to help reduce clutter, add order, and make your space safer at the same time.

Reorganize: take a look at what’s a floor level that may be a tripping hazard.

  • Get stacks of magazines off the floor and into magazine files on a counter or bookcase.

  • Invest in a plant stand.

  • Move items in cabinets that you use frequently to the front, so you are not climbing or reaching for them.

  • Get a shoe rack to get shoes out of your way.

  • Use cord organizers to move electrical and computer cords away from walking areas.

Toss: as you purge consider getting rid of:

  • Throw rugs, mats, and loose area rugs.

  • Small footrests

  • Any decorative items or piles that are currently on the floor

Fix: now’s also a good time to make needed repairs and additions:

  • Get cracked or broken steps repaired.

  • Get someone to replace dead bulbs in ceiling lighting especially and hallways and bathrooms.

  • Add grab rails around the toilet and also in the tub or shower along with no-slip grip strips.

Unfortunately, many people do not tell their doctor or family if they’ve had a fall. This is important information to share as it opens the door for finding ways to prevent future falls. If you have any concerns about your risk of falling talk to us today.
